Feathers Wallpaper by Mini Moderns

I am a huge fan of Mini Moderns and I really admire the approach that Keith and Mark take towards their work. I had the opportunity to interview Keith a while back and finding out more about the brand and how the guys work really did just cement Mini Moderns’ position in my list of favourite interior brands. I particularly like the way that they produce wallpaper, paint and soft furnishings in colourways that co-ordinate with one another making it particularly easy to create a look that works without having to spend hours colour matching. So I was really happy to see a new collection of wallpaper joining the Mini Moderns arsenal in all the great colours that we have become accustomed to from previous designs. ‘Feathers‘ is the third wallpaper design in the Mini Moderns ‘Hinterland’ collection, which takes inspiration from the nature reserve of Dungeness, on the South Kent coast. 

The design, which marks a repeat collaboration between Mini Moderns and artist, Matt Sewell, is based on Matt’s feather watercolours, which feature in the design for the end papers of his book ‘Our Songbirds’. The individual feathers each relate to the birds featured in the book.

Mark and Keith of Mini Moderns say: “We were very keen to work with Matt again, and when we saw his book we instantly knew we wanted to create a wallpaper with him, since the subject matter fits so well with our new collection. We had initially thought we wouldn’t be able to achieve a painterly effect with our traditional print production methods – but, after experimenting with our manufacturer on different techniques, we then felt we could approach Matt with the idea. Luckily he said yes.”

Matt says: “It’s been great working with the guys at Mini Moderns again. They have such good taste and a fantastic approach to using illustrations in their designs that I was honoured to be asked, and over the moon when my end pages feather paintings from my ‘Our Songbirds’ book were decided upon for a wallpaper. Hope everybody loves it as much as we do!”

The wallpaper launched as part of London Design Festival 2014 at the Southbank Centre’s Festival Terrace Shop, where Mini Moderns will have a month long residency. It is available in five gorgeous colourways: Lido, Mustard, Chalkhill Blue, British Lichen and Coach Emerald.

I am seriously considering using feathers in Chalkhill Blue for a feature wall when I decorate my master bedroom. Fingers crossed it goes with the paint we’ve already chosen.
