Review : Holix Outdoor Floor Lamp by Jalu Ltd

In my last post, where I revealed my nautical garden makeover, you may remember seeing my fantastic new outdoor floor lamp. I promised I would do a full post on it so here it is in all it’s glory. It’s called Holix and it is by a company called Jalu Ltd. Based in Milton Keynes, Jalu is the brainchild of Alison Cavey and Juliet Kauffmann. Together they came up with the concept of these beautiful outdoor floor lamps designed for use in conservatories, garden rooms, on decks, patios or even by the pool. Wherever they are used it is easy to see that these contemporary, sculptural lights are the perfect accessory to stylish outdoor living. 

Each Holix outdoor floor lamp is a unique, hand-crafted piece that is hand cast to order in the UK by a skilled team of professionals. The sculptural lights are made from a novel and versatile material that is lighter than stone, but robust, durable and developed specifically for outdoor applications. I’ve also found that it is extremely heavy, which lends a real air of quality to the lamps. The material is also extremely tactile and has a really interesting finish.

The Holix lamp is actually modular so you can customise it to suit your needs. You select the base unit, add 1-5 modules and then finish it off with a table top or lid. As you can see in the image above I chose the base unit, 3 units and a lid. You are also able to choose from a variety of colours, I believe there are currently 12 on offer. You can have each module in the same colour, each module a different colour or you can do as I did and alternate two colours. I went for Midnight Blue and Vanilla Ice. For the contrasting Holix Lid I went for the Jalu Medley, which is created with inclusions from up to 3 standard colours. I went for Vanilla Ice as the base colour with Midnight Blue and Grey Mist insertions. I think it looks absolutely fantastic and it has exactly the coastal feel I was aiming for.

The individual modules stack together extremely easily. Each hexagonal unit has six pins that slip into six holes on the next unit. It really couldn’t be simpler to assemble your unit and to disassemble it should you wish to relocate it. It’s almost impossible to move the lamp in one go as it’s just so heavy, so it’s advisable to move the modules separately to avoid injury.

Each outdoor floor lamp comes fitted with a high quality luminaire with a replaceable 5W GU10 LED bulb included (50W equivalent) to ensure excellent quality of light and high energy efficiency, It is also delivered with a 3.5 metre 230V cable and 13A plug suitable for internal or external sockets. The cable can be positioned in various locations around the base unit thanks to little outlet holes which allow the cable to exit the unit smoothly.

The lamps are robust, durable and weatherproof meaning that you can leave them outside all year round without the need for a cover. Having said that, Jalu outdoor floor lamps are guaranteed for temperatures > -10°C, but in extreme weather conditions beyond this, you really should move the lamps to a more protected location. You could even bring them indoors as their stylish appearance means that they won’t look out of place at all. It’s good to know though that Jalu lamps are CE marked and guaranteed against frost damage for five years.

You can see that the base unit of our lamp is already looking a little water marked from the rain we have had recently. I wasn’t sure how to clean it up, as I tried to give it a quick wipe over with a wet wipe, but this was a bad idea. The rough texture of the material simply pulled the wet wipe apart. Having checked the FAQ sections on the Jalu website, I now know that all Jalu lamp casts are treated with a topical protector that means that any dirt and light marks may be easily removed using a cloth and washing up liquid. I haven’t tried this yet so I can’t comment on how it will clean up.

The light that the Holix provides is definitely more ambient light than task light. It’s not massively bright, instead it gives off a really nice, soft, romantic light, which is actually perfect for balmy summer evenings and even for darker, chillier autumnal nights. We haven’t found the light level to be a problem at all and we have enjoyed the dim glow that the Holix provides after the sun goes down. After all, who wants to sit out on a flood lit deck, right?

What I really like about the Jalu outdoor floor lamp is how they challenge traditional thinking as to how to style your outdoor spaces. They help turn outdoor spaces into sophisticated living areas. They can be used as stand alone statement pieces, or alternatively they can be used in groups within a landscaping scheme. In fact, they aren’t just reserved to residential settings. I think they would look equally at home in commercial premises, particularly in foyers or courtyards.

I can really recommend the Holix Outdoor lamp if you are looking for a bespoke statement piece for your garden. These atmospheric lamps are a great focal point and the fact that they can stay outside all year without the need for a cover is a real bonus. I won’t be leaving mine outside though as I’m pretty sure we won’t be spending that much time on the deck come winter. It gets really windy here and we get lots of driving rain so we’ll probably store our Holix in the shed until spring time.
