Interiors Trend : Definitely Delft

Emmie Land Duvet Set from Ikea

Well it’s that time of year again when I am called upon to perform my seasonal duties as a trend hunter. This time last year I was contacted by Vouchercodes.co.uk and asked to be one of their High Street Hunters. This basically means that each season I identify a trend that I believe will be big in interiors over the coming months and then I hunt the high street to find products that fit the trend and allow us to bring it into our homes at an affordable price. The trend that I have identified for this season is one that I am calling ‘Definitely Delft’.

This is a trend that has been making its mark on the catwalk and will continue to do so well into 2014. Fashion designers have been taking inspiration from the infamous Dutch ceramic pottery which was styled on the imported Chinese porcelain of the 17th century. Roberto Cavalli’s Resort 2013 collection paid hommage to Delft in a big way and Valentino also went Dutch when it unveiled its Fall 2013 Runway Collection. Caroline Hererra incorporated the elegant blue and white theme into her Pre Fall 20113 Runway Collection whilst Tadashi Shoji also presented a Delft-inspired gown as part of his Spring 2013 Runway Collection.

And we all know that what makes an impression on the catwalk will sooner or later filter through to interior design. And that is exactly what is happening right now as a number of product designers are bringing out products for the home in the striking blue and white Delft style. As we have come to expect, it’s the high-end designers that jump on the bandwagon first.

Marcel Wanders and Dutch design brand Moooi have designed a collection of ceramic vases which have been produced and decorated actually at ‘Royal Delft’, the original producer of the beautiful Delft Blue ceramics. The vases reinterpret and revitalize Delft Blue and old Dutch craft using new ideas for shapes and decoration.

As part of his personal edition Wanders has also designed a collection called One Minute Delft Blue that comprises a selection of vases and plates as well as a selection of sculptures not shown here.

I also couldn’t write this post without featuring this fantastic Blue Porcelain Wallpaper by Studio Ditte as well as the gorgeous Monotone Oval light in the iconic style of 16th-century Delftware by Dutch designer Jacco Maris.

So as you can see Delft is increasingly serving as a source of inspiration for many high-end designers. In 2014, I predict that you can see this trend really taking off in interiors. And it won’t be long until it starts appearing on the high street too. As yet there aren’t too many high street brands that have embraced the trend but it is slowly starting to trickle down a level and I’ve already found a selection of products that are available on the high street and will enable us to bring the ‘Definitely Delft’ trend into our own homes for under £80.

So there you have it. My prediction for the coming season in my capacity as a High Street Hunter is ‘Definitely Delft’. I’d love to know what you think of this trend and whether this is a trend you had already noticed. Also if you know if any great high street products that fit this trend please do let me know in the comments below. You know I love hearing from you guys!

  • I am a delft fan. I love to make this delft collection as interior decoration at my house. Collections that I have ranging from plates, vases, sculptures. I remember when I came to the Netherlands I bought some delftware collections at aronson.com ; Their collection is very interesting, finest and different.

  • I would love to know where to get a duvet like the delf one in the pic on this site… Please tell me. I will go there post haste!

  • Hi Stacey,

I’ve just seen this post and absolutely love it! Needless to say, it reminds me of my time in Holland. I adore Delfts Blauw as they call it in Dutch. I’m going to send a link to this post to my fellow Dutch translators. They’re going to love it. Wat leuk!
