The search for ever more sustainable materials has become increasingly important over the past few years as society has become more and more aware of its impact on the planet. Combine this with the trend for cheaper goods and the rise of the throw away mentality and this furniture by Australian company Karton Group is the perfect response to these two trends.
Made from cardboard, the furniture from Karton is affordable, durable and 100% recyclable and doesn’t look half bad either. The range includes chairs, stools, tables, drawer units, shelving, storage boxes and even a double bed. All of these items provide an impossibly strong, exceptionally handsome and conveniently cheap way to sleep, sit, store or live.
With this furniture you can move it, flatten it, store it or leave it exactly where it is. It can be used as permanent furniture or occasional furniture that is only erected when needed. It really does offer a great deal of flexibility.
The designer behind this range is called Hans-Peter Stange and after studying Art History and Industrial Design in Berlin, Hans-Peter began an internship with a corrugated cardboard manufacturer. Immersed in the unique processing technologies and characteristics of cardboard, he set off on what would become a life-long relationship with the unique building material. The resulting furniture range uses a clever system of folds and tabs which makes assembly a cinch with no tools or glue required.
There are a great series of videos available on the website showing how all this furniture is put together. The one below shows just how to put the paperpedic bed together.
So what do you reckon? Would you ever consider cardboard furniture?
What a fantastic idea! Not sure I’d trust the cardboard bed though…
I love the fact that you just fold it to assemble, almost like origami furniture!
Hi Matt, Have you seen the video where they put the bed to the test? They manage to get over 20 adults standing on it at the same time. So it is pretty damn sturdy! Check it out on vimeo.
These cardboard furniture are just wonderful! This will be perfect for an office set-up. I just wonder if it’s going to be durable enough for a household filled with overly energetic children? Is this child-proof?
Below is a link to a video where they are testing the strength of the cardboard bed and it can hold the weight of 22 people or close to 2 tonnes so it is pretty strong stuff!

Uuh, this is really nice. I like the storage boxes under the bed. Would really like to get some for our bedroom actually :)
Oh I’m liking it Stacey. I’ve got one of those ‘love seats’ by Flexible love that came out a quite few years ago now. I think they must’ve been one of the first design products in cardboard. I love what everyone is doing with cardboard these days, the likes of Giles Miller, Lazerian Studio and Molo Design. Thanks for the post
