October is turning out to be really lovely. I don’t know about where you are, but here in Devon it’s been pretty sunny and dry. It’s still really cold but I don’t mind that so much as long as it’s not wet. And can we just talk about all the beautiful colours that we’re seeing in nature at the moment. The trees are slowly changing colour and starting to lose their leaves which are falling and creating the most wonderfully colourful carpets on the ground. The kids’ new favourite activity is jumping in piles of leaves and kicking them up into the air. It’s amazing how excited they get.

Everywhere we look, there are varying shades of greens, yellows, oranges, reds, purples and browns. Autumn isn’t my favourite time of year (I’m more of s Summer person) but I sure do love seeing the colours change. It’s such a wonderful introduction to the winter months and although it’s colder, I do find that these colours help to create a cosy feeling and a sense of warmth.

Back in September, I visited Maison & Objet and many of these Autumn/Winter 2018 colour trends could be spotted throughout the show. Green was still massively popular, but it has been joined by a whole host of other earthy colours from mustard yellows and ochre to terracottas, burnt oranges, berry reds, deep purples and teal. Natural, earthy colours are all the rage right now and you can expect to see them infiltrating our homes over the coming season. I’m actually really excited about this. I never normally bother to change my home decor according to the seasons, it all seems like a bit of an expensive exercise, but I might be convinced this year as I love all these autumn colours and they would work so well in my living room.

Luckily for us consumers these colours are already popping up everywhere so no need to wait to incorporate these beautiful Autumn/Winter 2018 colour trends into our homes.

Take a look at the 2018 collection from sofa company Darlings of Chelsea for example. It is already full of these trendy earthy colours. I wanted to find out more about the colour trends that Darlings of Chelsea are focusing on this season and how they predict what colours will be popular. I put a few questions to John Darling, the owner of Darlings of Chelsea, to see what he had to say.

What colours do you believe will be trending in interiors in the coming months?

Gen Z Yellow has been huge for 2018 and we believe this sunny hue will continue to dominate for the next couple of years, but perhaps evolve into a variety of shades from lemon sorbet for the pastel palette, to a golden French mustard for a luxe feel.

We are seeing a lot of bright oranges and pinks surfacing through the catwalks, which is a quick identifier that they will be hitting the interiors industry imminently .

Why do you think these colours will be so popular?

I think that with a lot of uncertainty in the world at the moment, we all feel this sense to brighten up the place, and making your home as colourful and inviting as possible is a great way to start!

Any tips for using these colours in our homes?

If you’re looking to incorporate colour into your lounge then choose a bold coloured sofa, like the Malvern in Varese Cassis, which is a great way to create a bright focal point. I like my sofa to stand-out so if you’re brave enough, paint the walls and add accessories in contrasting colours, or choose items in similar hues for a simple yet effective scheme.

How do you go about identifying the colours that will be popular?

We look at colour intelligence reports from industry experts like PANTONE and WGSN and decide which of these colours would best suit our designs. We then source fabrics and leathers that match our favourite hues and add them to fabric selection on offer for our best-selling sofas, like the Whinfell and Charnwood.  We also have a colour simulator function on our website when you go to choose a fabric for your sofa, which allows you to see what the sofa will look like in the latest trending colours.

How long does it take you to incorporate them into your range once you’ve worked out what they will be?

It takes six weeks to manufacture them for the shop floor – one day to get the fabrics online and in store for customers to look and feel.

What about fabrics? What is growing in popularity at the moment?

Velvet is still very popular but there is a growing desire for mixed materials and patterns being used in the home, which is feeding into the Maximalism revival. So we have recently added a range of leather and fabric mix sofas to our lines, which are simply stunning and add a comfy vibe to a formal yet stylish setting.
