Bedroom Furniture for Kids by Dear Kids

When I had my daughter, I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t suddenly abandon my passion for interiors to become a mummy blogger as so many bloggers tend to do when they have kids. However, it is inevitable that this new role means a massive change of focus in your life and all of a sudden you can’t help but become a whole lot more interested in everything there is to do with children. But don’t worry, you won’t start seeing a whole barrage of posts about children, but I probably will blog a little more about interiors for children so I hope you don’t mind that. Back in April, my husband and I found out we are expecting our second child (hurrah!! and eeeek!!!) due mid November so understandably my thoughts have been occupied by questions such as “How on earth are we going to fit two children into our teeny weeny two bed flat?” It is certainly going to be a real challenge. Kids have so much stuff for such little people and it’s already a problem trying to find the space for Matylda’s belongings so goodness knows where we’ll find the space for more baby supplies. But I guess we’ll just have to manage. We haven’t found out if we’re expecting a boy or a girl as we both love surprises but obviously it will make things a little easier if Matylda has a sister to share her room with. If a boy pops out we’ll need to start thinking about moving house in the next few years and all the added pressure that brings. But we’ll see what happens on D-Day!

But being pregnant again has me thinking about space saving ideas for children’s bedrooms and how it is possible to cram two kids comfortably (and stylishly) into one room. I’ve been looking around at bedroom furniture that makes the best use of space and this may be because it incorporates a lot of storage, it elevates the bed freeing up floor space, or because it stacks the kids up. I came across the Italian company Dear Kids a long time ago, before I had Matylda in fact, but I never got around to posting this as it wasn’t high on my list of interests back then. But things have changed, and now space-saving kids furniture is more of a priority for me. I must say, at the moment, I’m leaning towards a loft bed with a second bed positioned perpendicularly underneath. I think this maximises the square footage available and allows you to make the best use the space gained under the loft bed. I feel it’s far less claustrophobic than bunk beds, which I’ve never really been a fan of. I sadly won’t be able to afford any designer or custom built furniture but there are some great cheaper options I’ve been exploring like the KURA Loft Bed from IKEA which has quite a few configuration options. It can be used for one child as a loft bed or can be turned upside down and used as a low bed. Or if you need it to accommodate two kids it can be used as a loft bed with a mattress added on the floor underneath or a second bed added perpendicularly underneath. I’ve got a good while yet until the two kids will be in the same room so I’m going to start planning the nursery revamp now. I’ll be taking inspiration from innovative companies like Dear Kids and then trying to work out how I can achieve the same effect on a budget.
