I spotted this a few weeks ago and wanted to share it with you guys because I think it’s really clever. It’s called Briiv and it is a sustainable and natural air purifier. Designed and made in the UK, ‘Briiv’ is an eco-friendly way of improving the air quality in your home. And air quality is probably something we should all be thinking about right now as we are confined to our homes for the foreseeable future.
I’ve written about the importance of good indoor air quality before and explained why it can be beneficial to get an indoor air quality test carried out. We had it done this time last year, as we had been worried about some damp and mould issues. It was a real relief getting the results back and putting our minds at rest, especially as we have small children and I am asthmatic.
Briiv is a good-looking air filter
But I really like the idea of having an air purifier at home working away to ensure the quality of the air that we are breathing is the best it can be. I’ve looked into getting one a few times, but what always puts me off is their cumbersome size and their unattractive appearance. Gadgets are great and often very useful, but they can look too technological for my liking. I’d be much more inclined to invest in things if they blended more easily into our home interior.
That’s exactly what attracted me to the Briiv sustainable and natural air purifier. It doesn’t look like a giant white household appliance that would stand out in my home like a sore thumb. Its elegant form makes it look more like a designer terrarium than anything else and it’s a lot smaller than others I’ve come across.
The Briiv sustainable and natural air purifier would actually look really great in my home and I would have no problem placing it on the sideboard in my living room. It would blend in really well against our green walls which are painted in Dulux’s Moss Blanket and if you stood it amongst a selection of plants, nobody would ever know that it’s an air purifier.
Briiv uses all Natural Materials
But that is not the only benefit of Briiv. This sustainable and natural air purifier uses all-natural materials to deliver purification performance that equals that of conventional devices. The purifier can remove harmful toxins and particles from a 4m x 4m room in just 30 minutes.
To do this, the machine has a powerful four-stage filter process that uses 100% biodegradable and natural materials including moss, activated charcoal, coconut husk and Astino wool.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be unveiling the Briiv Air Purifier, after many months in development. The device is like nothing currently available and is, without doubt, the most sustainable air purifier ever created. Everything we design has green credentials at its heart, so the Briiv Air Purifier has 100% biodegradable filters and is made from 90% natural and sustainable materials. Our efficient natural filters can even be composted down fully, to zero waste, within 3-4 months.”
Sean Sykes, Designer, Briiv
Briiv is Environmentally Friendly
This is in stark contrast to other products on the market. Most other air purifiers use filters manufactured from a combination of glass fibres and plastic. Once they reach the end of their lives, typically after 6-8 months, they are disposed of and head straight to landfill. This is not the case with Briiv.
Even the body of Briiv is environmentally friendly as it is made from an injection moulded bio-plastic called Vibers. Its main ingredient is elephant grass and is fully biodegradable.
The renewable Astino wool used in Briiv is also used by NASA for air filtration in spacecrafts, thanks to its incredible ability to remove harmful particles and combat airborne viruses. It has been proven to perform as well as plastic HEPA filters in testing, according to Briiv’s Managing Director, James Whitfield.
I am a big advocate of the circular economy, having researched and written about it here. So I’m happy to see that this sustainable and natural air purifier is a great example of a more circular product and proves that it is possible to create biodegradable and circular electronic products without compromising on quality.
Briiv Air Purifier is Energy-Efficient
If those benefits already mentioned aren’t enough to convince you, it’s worth mentioning that Briiv is very energy efficient and powered via USB. It is also smart home compatible (Alexa & Google) and comes with its own dedicated app or physical buttons for those that don’t wish to use an app.
Briiv is currently seeking funding via a Kickstarter campaign. They are halfway to their goal as of writing this and there are 55 days left. So if you like this idea as much as I do and want to support Briiv on their mission to purify the air that we breathe, whilst benefitting from early-bird discounts, make sure you back their campaign.
And I’d love to hear what you think about the Briiv air purifier so leave me a comment below.
I would love to have one of these. please let me know if they are available in the US. thank you, Aleethea W
Hi Aleethea, I’m not entirely sure if they are available in the US. Have you checked their website? If it’s not clear on their website maybe you could contact their customer service department to ask?
Just saw your segment on the Ford Innovation TV show on CBS. Looks like a wonderful concept, and I love the fact there are no plastic filters to dispose of. When this product becomes available for purchase, I will be very interested in purchasing.
Hi Deborah, the Briiv air filter is already available to purchase here in the UK. The link is in the post to buy one. However, if you are not based in the UK it may be that they are not available yet. I will contact Briiv and ask the question.
I’d really like to see the evidence that this works. Are there any independent studies that verify the claims?
Oh this looks lovely – what a fabulous idea! I’d been looking at small air purifers recently but as you say, most are a bit ugly and none are as sustainable and natural as this x
You can’t beat a sustainable product that also looks good!
