Canary Home Security System

I’ve always had an interest in smart technology for the home, ever since I researched and wrote an article about the Smart Grid. But recently I have been intrigued by home security systems. I have always thought of a home security system as being reserved for the extremely wealthy. You know, the kind of people who live in manor houses with lengthy driveways that culminate in massive electronic wrought iron gates. Or perhaps the uber-rich techy city dwellers.

And that may have been the case previously, where a good quality, effective home security system was out of reach of most of the population. Not only were they expensive, but they often required a technician to come into your home to set it up.

However, technology has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years and thanks to the Internet and wireless connectivity, a home security system is now much easier to install and use and is far less costly. Whether that be an intruder trying to break in, an uninvited guest wandering around your home or simply the family pet causing havoc while you’re at work. When motion is detected, Canary records it in HD video and sends it to your phone, with a mobile alert.

The Canary also benefits from its own alarm system so in an emergency you can sound a 90-decibel siren or connect with local police right from the Canary app. This is particularly handy if you want to startle an intruder and hopefully scare them off.

Canary has four modes and is able to automatically change mode when you enter and leave your home. There are no complicated keypad codes to remember.

Away: when all members are away, Canary monitors for activity and sends notifications
Home: when a member is home, record events, customise notifications or set to private
Night: schedule a Canary to monitor for activity and send you notifications while you sleep
Privacy: when set to private, Canary’s camera and microphone are fully disabled

It is particularly useful for watching your pets, for example, you will be able to check if the dog walker turned up to walk your pet. But you can also use it to record your family while at home to make sure you don’t miss any important milestones. Obviously, you don’t always have a camera to hand so you may not be recording when your baby takes his or her first steps.

But with Canary, there is no need to constantly be worrying about filming these precious moments. You can watch recorded events, and save and bookmark the ones worth keeping.

It also comes in handy for older children who can stay home alone. You can check what they get up to when they come home from school whilst you are still at work. Canary allows you to access the timeline for a living history of your home.
