Every year, paint brand Dulux announces its Colour of the Year as part of its Colour Futures trend forecast. This involves a team of global colour and design experts who develop the annual forecast based on emerging trends in interior design, architecture, fashion, and beauty, as well as the social and economic influences that will affect the way that we live in the coming year. The overriding theme of Colour Futures 2017 is inspired by the idea of ‘life in a new light’ and is all about celebrating a new outlook on the simple things that make life special. With this, Dulux has announced that the Colour of the Year 2017 will be Denim Drift.
As the world changes, people are taking a fresh look at the everyday elements of life – our family and friends, work, connecting with nature, and the pleasure of experiences. We are incredibly excited that ‘Life in a new Light’ is the driving influence for 2017 and is seen in all our colour trends for the year.

I personally was very happy to hear the news that Denim Drift has been selected as Colour of the Year for 2017. Navy blue is my all time favourite colour and blue generally makes me feel very calm, relaxed and happy. The year before last, I painted my bedroom a deep shade of blue and I absolutely love it. I was petrified at first as it is such a bold statement, but it was the perfect colour choice for a bedroom, very soothing and restful. Whilst I prefer my blues a little darker and deeper, Denim Drift is a beautiful, timeless and versatile grey-blue and according to Dulux it is the must-have colour for the year ahead. I must say I was a little surprised by this choice as I was expecting something a little more exciting and risky from Dulux and for me Denim Drift is quite a safe choice. But one that I’m very happy with!
With denim blue set to dominate the interior and fashion trend agenda for 2017, Denim Drift is the perfect fit to reflect the times we live in, that real desire for simplicity. Designers love it and so do we. Denim Drift and its complementary colour palette of tonal blues shows the growing importance of this colour area which we are constantly surrounded by. It’s even the world’s favourite colour. There is a colour combination for everyone’s taste and preference, but with that soothing denim blue being our firm favourite, just like in our wardrobes.

Alongside Denim Drift, Dulux has developed a beautiful tonal colour palette specifically to complement the Colour of the Year. This colour pallette features a spectrum of blues and complimentary blue-hued tones.They look absolutely stunning together and when used in an interior they would really help to add depth and movement to a room.
Creating a blue colour scheme is successful when you choose shades that work beautifully together. This year the Colour of the Year, Denim Drift, has been teamed with a palette of blues which give you the confidence to get it right every time. There are ten blues within the palette, five of them, including Denim Drift, are muted and atmospheric and the remaining five are cleaner, brighter hues that pack more of a punch. The whole collection has been designed to be used in combination across different elements of an interior from the walls to the furniture, furnishings and accessories. You can turn the visual impact up with the brighter blues and down with the muted blues to suit the style and personality of a room and can be sure that none of them will ever look out of place.

It’s a lovely colour, very calming without being too cold. I can see it being used it lots of different types of rooms, whether it’s a room with grand period details, a very modern space or a teenagers bedroom x

As a big fan of blue, I love it – especially the additional colour palette they’ve produced to go with the Denim Drift, as it broadens the options so much. It’s interesting how interior trends are so in line with fashion trends these days.
A great choice for colour of the year – I do love blue! In fact, my room is already painted that fresh bright blue (an old Dulux one in fact, if I remember correctly!) so happy to find I’m ahead of the game.. Could be persuaded to upgrade to Denim Drift though – very nice!
