As soon as I saw these indoor living wall kits I knew I had to share them with you. I’ve done a lot of research in recent months into biophilic design and it is a concept that I am really interested in. For those of you who don’t know, biophilic design basically refers to designing the built environment in a way that incorporates nature.
The word biophilia originates from the Greek words for Life (Bios) and Love (Philia). It literally means a love of life or living things. As humans, we have an innate biological connection with nature which has existed since man’s very earliest days surviving from the land and living as one with nature.
But the world we live in now is distancing us more and more from nature as we spend the majority of our time inside and online. Velux actually made a really haunting video called The Indoor Generation and it has really stayed with me. When I first watched it, it left me feeling a bit cold. I immediately gathered the girls together and took them outside to play. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it here.
Watching this really hit home and made me realise how the home and work environment that we have created really isn’t serving us as well as it should and actually, isn’t in our best interests.
Luckily, the design industry seems to be taking this on board and biophilic design is playing a larger role in the design of the built environment. We are seeing public spaces such as hotels, offices, airports etc making a concerted effort to incorporate nature into their spaces, whether that be a water feature, natural materials, natural light, vegetation, or views of nature.
We’re following suit in our homes as the recent explosion in the popularity of house plants demonstrates. Books like Urban Jungle have been popular with people seeking to bring more greenery into their homes, and keep it alive.
So this indoor living wall kit from Chalk & Moss is a fantastic addition to the home or office for anyone looking to bring more biophilic design elements into their built environment.
Chalk & Moss is an online shop founded by Anna Sjöström Walton who wanted to offer a source for biophilic design advice and homewares that help improve wellbeing. Anna focuses on sustainable, green and natural products that encourage you to connect with, and enjoy, nature.
New to the shop are these fabulous indoor living wall kits, designed and made in the UK by Horticus. There are four kits ranging from small to extra large which allow you to create your own indoor vertical garden design.
I’d love something like this at home or in the office, but I just know I couldn’t keep it alive. Although I suppose I could fill it with faux plants for a similar effect.
What do you think? Would you like to have your own indoor living wall? Does adding nature into your home and work environment make a difference to your well being? Let me know in the comments below.
These are so cool, it’s like a mini jungle. I love the pattern of the pots.
Thank you, I’ll look into them! :)
They are cool, aren’t they?
Argh, I’m really intrigued by this ‘indoor generation’ film but don’t think I could watch it just now – we have no balcony or outside space in our flat, so we’ve been indoors for weeks! These living wall kits would be wonderful for our flat though, we have such high ceilings – so plenty of wall space – and good natural light since we have skylights. Definitely going to investigate these… x
I strongly suggest not watching the indoor generation film whilst we’re in lockdown Kate. It haunted me under normal circumstances!!
They look amazing! I will probably get some for my home
Hi they’re lovely but can’t find them on their website. Am I being a little dense?🤔
Hi Glyn,
The direct link is in the post. I have emailed it to you in case you couldn’t find it.
