The living room is undoubtedly the heart of our home—the space where we gather together as a family, eat together at mealtimes (we have a living room/dining room) relax after long days, and create some of our most cherished memories. Because it gets the most use, it’s also the room that tends to feel tired and dated the quickest. It’s no surprise, then that the living room often becomes the focus of our decorating efforts and is refreshed more often than any other space in our home.

As we step into 2025, the living room is evolving to reflect not just functionality, but also our need for comfort, personality, and a connection to nature. It’s no longer just a space to relax—it’s a sanctuary, a statement, and a canvas for creativity.

Whether you’re looking to reimagine your living room entirely in 2025 or give it a quick facelift, these living room decoration ideas will inspire you to create a space that feels fresh, stylish, and unmistakably yours in the year ahead. Let’s dive into what’s trending and how you can bring these concepts to life in your own home.

Double-Drenching and Earthy, Muddy Colours

One of the most impactful ways to transform a living room is by updating its colour palette. Colours set the tone of the room, influencing its mood and atmosphere. Neutral tones like greys, beiges, and off-whites were once popular choices for their versatility and timeless appeal. But richer hues and bolder tones will be popular as we head into 2025.

Consider grounded and earthy tones like terracotta, sage green, and rich, warm browns which are already trending, reflecting our desire for comfort and connection to nature. These colours can create a warm and inviting ambience, particularly in colder climates.

But in 2025 we’re not just dipping our toes tentatively into the paint pots. Instead, we are going all in. In 2024 we saw the bravest of homeowners opting to colour-drench the living room by painting walls, ceilings, doors, skirting boards, window frames, radiators, picture rails, panelling, and coving in a single shade of paint.

Next year they are taking this one step further with the double-drench. This new approach combines two or more related colours with varying undertones to create a cosy and cocooning space with a little more visual contrast. Double drenching is a fantastic way to confidently embrace and combine colours that might not normally be used together.

“Since first introducing the ‘Colour Drenching’ approach back in 2021, we have seen customers move away from traditional schemes to embrace deep and mid-tone hues from floor to ceiling and everything in between, creating really engaging, inviting spaces. ‘Double Drenching’ is an expansion of this colour confidence, taking the concept into a highly creative, sophisticated and nuanced approach to decoration,” says Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director at Little Greene.

Lighting With Natural Materials

In 2025, lighting is taking a cue from the natural world, with biophilic design influencing how we illuminate our spaces. Layered lighting remains a cornerstone of effective living room design, but this year, the focus is on using natural materials like linen, raffia, seagrass, and bamboo to bring warmth and texture into the room.

Linen lampshades, for example, soften the glow of floor lamps, creating a cosy and inviting ambience for evening relaxation. Seagrass pendant lights or bamboo fixtures add a tactile, organic element to overhead lighting, bridging the gap between function and artistry. Raffia-wrapped table lamps, meanwhile, offer a subtle nod to craftsmanship, perfect for accentuating side tables or corners in need of gentle illumination.

The beauty of incorporating natural materials into your lighting is their ability to connect the living room to nature, even in urban settings. These earthy textures and finishes work seamlessly in layered lighting schemes, balancing practical task lighting with ambient and accent lighting. The result is a harmonious, grounded space that feels effortlessly in tune with both modern aesthetics and the natural world.

Rugs in Organic Shapes

In 2025, rugs are moving away from the traditional rectangular and geometric designs that have dominated interiors for decades. Instead, the focus is on organic shapes and fluid lines that mimic the effortless beauty of nature. These unconventional forms bring softness and movement to the living room, creating a space that feels dynamic and alive.

Rugs with flowing edges, asymmetrical contours, or patterns inspired by water, wind, or natural landscapes are becoming increasingly popular. These pieces not only add visual interest but also help to define zones within an open-plan living room. For example, a freeform rug can anchor a seating area while blending seamlessly into its surroundings, softening hard edges and adding a sense of spontaneity to the space.

When choosing a rug in this style, consider textures and materials that echo the biophilic trend. Natural fibres complement the organic aesthetic and add a layer of warmth and comfort underfoot. Additionally, rugs in neutral tones, soft pastels, or muted earth colours enhance the natural vibe while allowing the fluid shapes to take centre stage.

Organic-shaped rugs are more than just a design trend—they’re a reflection of our growing desire to create spaces that feel intuitive, relaxed, and deeply connected to the natural world.

The Rise of the Media Wall Fireplace

Fireplaces have long been the heart of the living room, offering warmth and a natural focal point. In 2025, the fireplace is taking on a more contemporary role with the rise of statement designs, particularly the media wall fireplace. These modern iterations combine form and function, seamlessly blending the timeless charm of a fireplace with the sleek practicality of integrated media storage and display.

Media wall fireplaces are ideal for those who want to create a visually impactful centerpiece in their living room. These designs typically feature a recessed electric fireplace set within a custom-built wall that incorporates space for a mounted TV. The result is a unified, streamlined look that enhances both style and utility.

Beyond their practicality, media wall fireplaces provide a canvas for creativity. Choose finishes that align with your interior design style—natural stone or textured plaster for a timeless, earthy feel, or smooth lacquered panels for a minimalist, contemporary look. LED-lit shelves or niches can showcase books, plants, or art, further personalizing the space while adding layers of visual interest.

For those embracing biophilic design, consider pairing your media wall fireplace with organic materials like reclaimed wood mantels or stone cladding. This integration of natural elements adds warmth and character, softening the modern aesthetic and grounding the room in a sense of calm.

A statement fireplace, especially a media wall design, isn’t just a source of warmth; it’s a multifunctional centrepiece that enhances the room’s ambience, functionality, and style, making it a must-have feature for modern living rooms in 2025.

Plenty of Plants

A mix of real and artificial plants in an alcove

Plants are a fantastic way to breathe life into any room in your home. I’m including plants as a top trend for 2025 because plants are always a good idea! Plants add vibrancy, improve air quality, boost mood and create a sense of tranquillity. From towering floor plants like fiddle-leaf figs to smaller potted varieties such as succulents or peace lilies, there’s a plant to suit every space, lifestyle and level of gardening expertise.

For those who prefer low-maintenance options, artificial plants have come a long way in terms of realism and quality. They provide the same aesthetic benefits without the need for watering or specific light conditions.

So that’s my prediction for some of the trends we will see as we move into 2025. But as always, I don’t recommend blindly jumping on the trend bandwagon. First, decide how you want your home to feel then decide which trends you want to adopt.
