I’m not a big animal person as I’m actually allergic to animal fur so when it comes to pets I have to keep it simple. We have a Syrian hamster named Fritz and that is it. Until recently, I’ve been quite pleased that we don’t have cats or dogs as I’ve never really come across pet beds that I would be proud to have on display in my own home. They tend to be quite ugly and that is a real challenge for design conscious pet owners. But I started looking into it and I found that there are actually some great options out there now. (Remember this post and this one?) It seems that the market for designer pet accessories has finally matured. I even heard that IKEA is bringing out a range of pet beds soon so that means that design loving pet people will no longer have to take out a small mortgage to accommodate their furry friends stylishly.
In the mean time I’d like to introduce you to Tuft + Paw. Founded by Jackson Cunningham and his girlfriend, Tuft + Paw is an American company that produces beautifully designed modern furniture for cats. The pair have always been cat people, but it was on a recent trip to Colombia where they witnessed first hand the suffering of so many cats worldwide that they decided to take action and set up their company as a way to help.
We’re not naive enough to think high-end cat furniture is going to solve that problem, but we do believe that with Tuft + Paw, we can build a community of cat lovers that will be able to come together to make a difference. High-end cat furniture is kind of the front end of the business, but behind the scenes we think it will allow us to make a massive impact with giving back and shining a light on key issues.
Jackson Cunningham, Founder, Tuft + Paw
The designers who come up with the designs for the stylish cat beds are Kendra Kirchmer and Ingrid Morgan who have taken their love of interior design and purring pussycats and combined the two, breathing fresh life into the corner of living spaces that so often aesthetically abused. Stylish, unique and unusual, the line of Tuft + Paw beds available is quite varied and ranges from beds, houses, hammocks and teepees to trees, perches and scratch posts, all of which fits perfectly into a design-conscious home.
From the cushion comfort of the Trattoria to the spherical hidey-hole cover of the Capullo, you will find a range of designs that will offer the littlest member of your household five star living, incorporating cosy fabrics, one of a kind designs and a range of colours to suit even the fussiest of moggies.
If stylish cat beds are something you have often thought about, why not have a go at coming up with your own design. Tuft + Paw are currently running a Sustainable Cat Bed Design Contest. They are looking for new and innovative cat bed designs, with the winning design eventually going into production in the US, being promoted as one of Tuft + Paw’s new flagship products and being donated to shelters across the US. The winner will also come away with $1500. Just get your designs in by 30th November to be considered.
