One of the things I absolutely love about social media is the way that it allows you to connect with people in countries far away that you would ordinarily have no way of knowing about (that’s the people not the countries!). I have made some fantastic contacts on social media and I have discovered some of the most inspiring people. One of those people is Janne Synnove, a Norwegian lady that I first discovered on Instagram (@synnoverom) and have been an avid follower of ever since along with the other 6116 followers that she has. Every day, Janne posts some absolutely stunning pictures of her beautiful house and each and every time that I see these photos it makes my knees go weak. Whilst a picture is said to paint a thousand words, I was intrigued by Janne and wanted to find out more about the person who lives in this beautiful Norwegian nest! Luckily for us, Janne was keen to take part in an interview for Seamus (that’s the sheep!) and I about how she created this serene Scandinavian interior.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m from a small place called Søgne in southern Norway. My husband inherited an old farm right outside Stavanger, so we moved here, and we have been living here for 20 years now. I have a great husband and two lovely daughters who are 18 and 19 years old. I have worked at a kindergarten, but interiors have always been my favorite hobby beside my family.
Do you have any interior design, decoration or styling qualifications?
I have no specific styling qualifications, but I am a certified interior supervisor.
When did you first become interested in interiors and decoration? Who or what inspired this interest?
Ever since I was a little girl I have always rearranged my furniture to create change. I think this says a lot, because I always wanted to change the rooms and the decoration to find a better solution.
How would you describe your style?
Our style is a mix of white, country and rustic. I love reusing old objects to create a new and unique look.
How long has it taken you to get your home the way you want it?
We have lived here for 20 years now, and our home is always changing just like life does.
Is there anything that you would change?
We have just started to renovate our bathroom, and I think it’s going to be great to have a bathroom that matches the rest of the house.
Which is your favorite room in the house and why?
My favorite room in our house is the dining room. Here we have a small office, a dining area and a big reading chair. This room makes me relax, and I really like the atmosphere we have created here.
You seem to stick to a very strictly defined colour palette in your house. Why these particular colours?
I try to choose colours that fill me with peace and quiet. This is usually neutral colours like white, grey, beige, black, mint and light pink.
Where are your favorite places to shop for your home?
I love going to flea markets, vintage shops, and also to secondhand shops. If I do shopping online, it has to be at Living or Finn. Living is a Norwegian retail shop, and Finn is an online flea market.
What are your top tips for creating a perfect home?
My top tip for creating the perfect home is to find out what you like. Don’t do as everybody else does, but follow your own road. Be creative and try to be original. Try to stick to one shape to create a certain balance in your home.
I would like to thank Janne for sharing her beautiful home with us today. For more interior pictures you can follow Janne on Instagram @synnoverom
This home is really my style. I also like neutrals and although some people find beige boring, it brings me peace and comfort. I have about the same colour palette and experiment a little with accessories and pillow cases.
Hi Louise, It’s gorgeous isn’t is? I just love the way everything compliments everything else so nicely. I don’t find the neutral colour palette boring at all. I bet your home is lovely too if it is similar to Janne’s house! I should take some tips from you two!!
Ethereal, understated luxury…it’s the little details that have bowled me over!
It’s beautiful isn’t it? You really should follow Janne on Instagram as she posts some beautifully styled pictures of her house on there. It’s all about the details!
What a lovely comfortable living home indeed. Quite perfect!
Gorgeous isn’t it Adriana? I wish my home was this well styled!
I really enjoyed this interview, thanks. I’m a sucker for mercury glass. Very serene.
