As the cold weather persists and we all start piling on the extra layers, I’ve been thinking about changing the fireplace at home. I have an ugly electric fire that we never use which is housed in a horrible laminated orange fire surround. It’s pretty hideous. I’d really like to replace it with a fire surround that is a bit more chunky and industrial looking to fit with the look we’ve created in the living room. I’ve been looking since 2013 and nothing has really jumped out at me. Although Next now have a couple that I quite fancy.

I also really like the idea of wood burning stoves. We totally don’t need one as the central heating is more than enough to keep our little flat toasty warm, but I just love the cosy atmosphere they create and you can’t beat the crackling and popping noises of burning wood, not to mention the smell. I’d like to think we could get the fireplace sorted for next winter but my list of home projects is extremely long so it might have to wait. We’ll see!

Anyway, I’ve received quite a few press releases over the winter months featuring stylish wood burning stoves that have had me drooling and dreaming. But I know many people are a little bit worried about the environmental implications of this type of heating. There have been recent new stories stating that Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London is looking to ban all open wood burning stoves in London. And this may be putting people off from investing in the stove of their dreams. However, modern stoves not only add a wonderful eye-pleasing aesthetic to your home but do so in a way that doesn’t harm the environment. They no longer have toxic fumes pouring into the skies in an alarming, o-zone depleting way.

These days many wood burning stoves are EcoDesign Ready, which means that they have been approved by the Stove Industry Alliance as having emissions low enough to meet the new European-wide Ecodesign programme due to come into effect in 2022. You can see a list of all Ecodesign Ready stove manufacturers here.

The new generation of wood burning stoves are also DEFRA approved and would no longer prove to be a threat to the quality of air in the capital. They are hugely popular across Europe and give everything you could want to ease the chill of those frosty, wintery nights. With the environmental implications covered, you can now pick a stove to suit your chosen decorative style and there are stoves for all tastes!

Now is the time to be thinking about your home, not only in terms of the dream look, but also by investing in the future of the environment, which goes hand in hand with a long term saving on your energy bill. Wood burning stoves have evolved to suit the home and the world we live in, and it’s time we evolve with them.
