As you know, I’m having a flooring dilemma in my kitchen. The tiles need replacing so I’ve been doing a bit of research to find out what we should replace them with. I don’t think I want to go for tiles again as they are quite cold and we don’t have underfloor heating. So I’ve been looking into other alternatives. At first, I thought about cork flooring, but it’s quite expensive and I’m a little worried it might date quickly. Then I thought about rubber floor tiles, but a few of my readers suggested that the texture might make them hard to keep clean and I certainly don’t want to make my life any harder when it comes to housework. So now I’m looking into vinyl click flooring.

Now I know that when we hear the word vinyl, many of us are immediately transported back to the ’80s when cheap look vinyl was a mainstay in most kitchens and bathrooms. Yes, in the past, vinyl may have earned itself a bad reputation as being a low-cost alternative to other authentic flooring materials. However, vinyl has come a long way and the modern versions have benefited from a host of technological and manufacturing advances which means that, as a flooring material, it can now hold its own against many other types of flooring.

Cost

Modern vinyl click flooring is not only stylish but it also comes in an array of colours and styles to suit all tastes and types of interiors. It is made to mimic real wood, stone and concrete and often looks hyper-realistic to the point where you can’t actually tell that it’s not the real thing. Another added benefit is the cost. Vinyl click flooring comes in at just a fraction of the cost of the materials it has been designed to replicate.

Durability

This type of flooring is also extremely durable and has exceptional performance when it comes to scratch resistance, water resistance, sound insulation and anti-slip properties. These features make vinyl click flooring a great option for busy family homes and especially for use in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms where the environment may be a little damp.

Unlike laminate flooring that is partially made from wood, vinyl is made from plastic so it won’t warp if it gets wet. In fact, it can even withstand flooding without getting damaged. The surface of vinyl is not easily penetrated by water, oil, chemicals, or grease making it very quick and easy to clean. It also requires very little maintenance, just a regular sweep, mop and vacuum will do.

Ease of Installation

Vinyl click flooring is also a lot easier to install than other flooring types and even easier than the old-fashioned sheet vinyl that we’re used to. It is the special click system that makes it so quick and easy to install, even for a DIY novice. All that is needed is a utility knife to cut the planks to size, no adhesive, grout or other tools are necessary. The locking mechanism enables the boards to simply “click” together when you lay them down. Interestingly they are just as easy to uninstall, so should a tile get damaged, it is extremely easy to remove it and replace it with a new one. Or if necessary you could even take it with you if you ever move house.

So if you are planning on installing a new floor in your home, it might be worth considering vinyl click flooring. It can give you the look you’re after at a fraction of the cost and has many added benefits making it ideal for a busy family home.

  • Vinyl flooring is durable and stands up well to heavy foot traffic. It is comfortable under foot and reduces noise, which can be important for owners with kids or pets. It is also less expensive than many other flooring options and is easy to install and maintain

  • We actually looked at vinyl click flooring when we went to buy carpet a few weeks ago. It’s incredible how good it looks now. We were advised to consider it over the tiles in the kitchen as the house is so old, we’re not sure what we’re going to find if we take them up. Looking forward to seeing what you go for!

  • I agree with Kimberly, vinyl flooring has come on in leaps and bounds. And it really is the most practical flooring for a kitchen. Looking forward to seeing your new kitchen floor. x
