When I was invited to the press launch of the new Vario by VELUX collection of bespoke flat roof windows, I was quite disappointed that I wasn’t able to attend. It sounded like such a lovely and thoughtful event which involved a light inspired yoga class followed by a sit-down breakfast underneath a beautiful flat roof window installation that was suspended above a table surrounded by greenery. Sadly though I was in Portugal visiting the Cork Oak forest at the time so the diary clash meant I wasn’t able to go.
However, I knew that you guys would be interested to learn more about Vario by VELUX. Having already written a lovely post about my loft conversion plans that featured lots of inspirational images from VELUX, and which has proven to be super popular with you and with my Pinterest followers, I decided to reach out to VELUX and see if they would work with me on a post about the new range of bespoke flat roof windows, even if I couldn’t attend the event. Being eager to spread the word about their new range, they agreed.
VELUX has been around for over 75 years now, helping people to bring more daylight and fresh air into their homes and thereby creating better living environments. I’m sure the majority of us are familiar with their roof windows and skylights. Personally, I have always associated VELUX with loft conversions first and foremost but they obviously also offer flat roof windows designed for single story extensions.
June saw the launch of Vario by VELUX, the brand’s first made-to-order roof light solution for flat roofs. The new Vario range is part of a proud Scandinavian design tradition. It is minimalistic, elegant, and driven by function and superior materials. But what sets Vario by VELUX apart is the fact that it is completely bespoke, offering a variety of shapes and sizes to fit any design space. This is a real bonus for us design-conscious homeowners as it allows us to become more involved in the design process and build a truly custom creation in our choice of shape, size, colours, features and finishes.
It is also great for self-builders as Vario by VELUX allows customers the option of ordering directly, without having to go through a glazer, roofer, architect or contractor. The Build your Own configurator tool allows us to design our own roof light and order it directly on the website.
I honestly love the idea that this range allows you to design fully bespoke flat roof windows that meet all your needs and means that you don’t need to compromise. And because of this, you have full control over how much daylight you are able to bring into your home extension. And we all know how important it is to get enough daylight and how much this affects our mental health and wellbeing. I’ve written about our experience with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) before.
I’ve recently been doing a lot of research into biophilic design as I was commissioned to write an article on this topic for Designer Kitchen & Bathroom magazine. You can read the article here if you would like to know more. In short, the word biophilia originates from the Greek words for Life (Bios) and Love (Philia). It literally means a love of life or living things. As humans, we have an innate biological connection with nature and biophilic design – an approach that brings elements of the natural world into the built environment – is now being championed as a complementary strategy for addressing many of modern society’s challenges to health and well-being.
The above video has been created by VELUX and paints a really rather disturbing picture of how we now live. Dubbed ‘The Indoor Generation‘, we apparently spend 90% of our time indoors without enough daylight or fresh air and science has proven that this is harmful to our health and wellbeing. In fact, 15% of the world’s population suffers from different levels of SAD. So bringing as much natural daylight into our homes is, undoubtedly, of great benefit.
Lack of daylight in our homes isn’t the only problem though. British homes are now 32% smaller than they were in the 1970s and, as a result, there is an increasing need for unique space-creating solutions to enhance the size of our homes, particularly as our families grow. Home extensions are the perfect way to create more functional and enjoyable living spaces that work for our families. And Vario by VELUX is the perfect product to ensure that our home extensions will allow us to bring in as much daylight as possible.
We have seen a trend for increased customisation of all parts of the home. In response to this, we wanted to create a completely customisable rooflight to fit all senses of style and design and need for more space by bringing more daylight into the home along the way. We believe Vario by VELUX is the perfect product for this as homeowners can work closely with our highly knowledgeable and skilled team to create a rooflight installation that is completely made-to-order to celebrate the uniqueness of homes.
