When you move into rented accommodation, it’s often the case that your bathroom or kitchen may not be to your liking. Most landlord’s don’t want to splash out on the latest, state-of-the-art kitchen or bathroom if they will not personally be living in the property. If you’re lucky you’ll get a relatively new kitchen or bathroom which might just be a bit budget and a bit bland. But if you’re unlucky you could end up with a really outdated, possibly even grimy kitchen or bathroom.
In fact, you could find yourself in the same position even if you’ve bought your home. It’s often the case that when buying a new home that you will want to replace the bathroom and kitchen with something more to your liking. But this takes a considerable amount of money and sometimes the budget won’t allow for these jobs to get done straight away.
However, there are things that you can do temporarily to improve the look and feel of these two vitally important rooms whether you are renting or saving up for a full on renovation.
On my recent trip to Maison & Objet in Paris last month, I discovered a German company called Boubouki, which means “bud” in Greek. Founded by graphic designer Julia Bünger, Boubouki specialises in stylish self-adhesive tile stickers for kitchens and bathrooms. Julia came up with the idea when she herself was looking for stylish tile stickers and found a serious gap in the market. Not one to shy away from a challenge, she decided to create some herself.
Designed and made in Germany, the collection now features over 200 designs from oriental mosaic patterns and borders, to graphic black and white designs, and nautical themed tile posters. Each design combines aesthetics with practicality. The stickers are completely water resistant and are therefore suitable for long-term use in damp areas. They are also heat and UV-resistant.
They are removable and can be pulled off in one piece without leaving any residue, which is perfect for renters who need to return the property in the same condition it was in when they moved in.
I particularly like the first few geometric black and white designs and I think these tile stickers are a really great way to add a bit of personality and style to a bland and boring bathroom or kitchen. What do you think?
Great idea. Wish I’d known about it years ago when I tried to brighten up boring white tiles by painting odd ones randomly a bright colour. Paint scrapes off fairly quickly. Why didn’t I think about it myself!!! Aaaaah! I love the Mondrian type linear black and white abstract one. Very striking. Endless possibilities.
Love these ideas of stickers on while tiles !! There is a style for everyone as well which is great. Thanks for sharing.
Yes there are lots of options so you’re bound to find something that will work for your personal style!
What a brilliant idea! Cheap bathroom upgrade option! I hope they can stand the daily bathroom usage and traffic!
According to Boubouki they can. But I’ve not actually tried them myself so can’t say for sure!
Such a great idea Stacey! Love the concept of being able to update with very little effort, ability and cost with these tile stickers. The Fornasetti ones are my faves.
They are great aren’t they? What a statement!
These are fantastic! A great way to ‘test’ different styles of tile pattern before investing in the real thing too.
Almost like a trial run?
Wow what a novel idea! Such a great way to tastefully update boring tiles!
Much better than living with a boring bathroom !
These are such a good idea and a great way of easily improving plain and dull wall tiles. Some of those designs are fab!
I really love the black and white geometric ones Rachel!
I bought these geometric tile stickers to put on my kitchen door which
Opens into my garden.so much better than gloss paint . The space was immediately
Twice as bright,without being overwhelming.
Great.
That’s good to know!
Great idea and some great designs. I love the Fornasetti style round stickers.
They definitely stand out don’t they?
Just what I need to transform my downstairs cloakroom after inheriting a terrible tile choice!
Oh fantastic! If you do use them please come back and let us know how it turned out!
I know a few people who love wall stickers and if they see the fornassetti ones they will go nuts! Right, I better forward to them then!
Fantastic, glad to be able to help spread the love!
These look brilliant Stacey – I love the more illustrative designs. As tiles usually have to last for years, it makes sense to go for a plain colour and just change stickers when you want a new look.
A much cheaper way to update a bathroom or kitchen for sure!
These are ace Stacey. When you highlighted these from M&O I thought they’d be a brilliant idea for rented accommodation. Those geometrics are ace
Renters should definitely take heed!
Oh I quite like the graphic black and white designs as well! I actually considered tile stickers to make my kitchen a bit more liveable whilst we plan our renovation – these would be super cute :) xx
Give it a go! Although knowing you the kitchen will be transformed before long!
Oooh, these are super cool and just what I need for my bathroom! It’s a bland new build, perfectly fine and functional, but could totally do with some jazzing up.. x
They sound perfect then Kate. I can imagine the geometric ones working for you!
These are so cool – I remember looking for tile stickers a long time ago and being disappointed at the lack of choice – they were old fashioned and horrible but these are brilliant and modern!
Same here! The options were so disappointing. These on the other hand are amazing!
