Over the years we have seen wallpaper transforming from a mundane and purely functional piece of the home decor puzzle into something much more creative, and flamboyant that really allows us to make a statement with our home interiors. From wallpaper based on origami, wallpaper with 3D style effects, to digitally printed and unbelievably realistic wallpaper that imitates other materials.
And now things have taken a step further into the future thanks to MEYSTYLE, a London-based company who specialise in designing and manufacturing bespoke wallpaper with the added feature of integrated light-emitting diodes.
MEYSTYLE actually pioneered the world’s first LED wallpaper 14 years ago when sisters Maria and Ekaterina Yaschuk first incorporated 99 LEDs into wallpaper in 2004. They have continued to refine the concept ever since and now that technology has finally caught up, they have been able to make the world’s first OLED wallpaper in collaboration with LG Display.
Launched at Decorex last month (September 2018), this ground-breaking development is a synthesis of technology and creative application and has resulted in an absolutely captivating new generation of smart materials.
What makes this product so special is the use of Organic Light Emitting Diode or OLED, which is an organic material-based surface light source. OLEDs are high-efficient as well as being eco-friendly and they also have the closest spectral power distribution to natural light. This makes them ideal for places with limited or no natural light or for places where quality light is needed.
Because the OLEDS are fully integrated into the wallpaper, it can be installed like any traditional wallcovering. However, it does require a socket or a light switch.
The collection’s Art Deco style came about as a natural reaction to the form of the OLEDs themselves and it embodies luxury, glamour and exuberance.
We wanted to make wallpaper that would look beautiful with the lights both on and off and the linear shapes and pastel vivid colours became a natural extension of the form.
MEYSTYLE’s mission is to “rescue walls from the background, integrating bold patterns with LED lights and OLED lights to create deep visual experiences that transform walls and wallpaper into works of art.”
Lighting and wallpaper are two of my favourite elements of interior design so to see these two components come together in a single product is extremely exciting! What do you think of this beautiful OLED wallpaper? Have you ever seen a more captivating wallpaper?
Absolutely love the concept of lighting and wallpaper combined and would love to to see it in a home setting. It’s set my mind racing at the possibilities of where and how it could be used. Thanks for introducing this to us Stacey! Love it!
This is so clever. I’d love to see it in real life somewhere. I can’t imagine it in your average home but I think it would be amazing for commercial interiors. Places like restaurants and bars could really have some fun with it.
This is such a clever idea, it gives wallpaper a new dimension. I’m looking forward to see how it develops in the future.
Oh, my, gosh. I knew I’d love this as soon as I saw OLED. This is sooooo cool! I so want this!! :-)
I just don’t know what to make of this. Is it crackers or genius? I think I’d have to see it in the flesh to be sure. The wallpaper looks super interesting in the photos but I’d love to see it on a wall in a normal home.
oh my world thats one stunning looking wallpaper collection – i have never seen anything this cool
It really is cool isn’t it Pati?
This is incredible!!! — I’d never heard of this company, but I LOVE it, simply incredible. Thank you so much for sharing!
Same Catherine. Just wish I’d seen it in person at Decorex!
Wow, that’s incredible! Mind-boggling to think they can incorporate that kind of technology into wallpaper
Can you imagine having to plug in your wallpaper? Just nuts!
wow these are beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing. I missed out on Decorex this year so I’m glad I was introduced to this product :)
I missed it too Natalie and now I’m kicking myself!
Oh my goodness this is just insane, I love it and what a clever idea!!
So clever Lins!
Wow these designs look stunning Stacey. Divine Savages were putting lighting into their wallpaper designs at 100% Design this year and it was really effective. I should imagine you would need low lighting in the room.
Right I’m off to look that up right now. Thanks for the heads up Lin!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS OMGEEEEEEEEE Where did you find this wallpaper brand, I am really really loving what I see. Virtually high fiving everyone involved in the design of those papers and you for writing about them !
Ha thanks Jenny. A press release popped into my inbox and as soon as I saw it I knew it had a place on the blog!
