I am very grateful to be able to share this briiv air purifier review with you all today. I first spotted the briiv air purifier back in early 2020 and I did a write up about it on the blog here. But at that point, I hadn’t had any personal experience with it at all. But a couple of weeks ago, briiv reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in testing it out for myself. Obviously, the answer was yes! So read on to find out what I thought of it.

When I first came across briiv I was particularly interested in indoor air quality. We’d had some problems in our home and we’d had a professional indoor air quality test to check it all out. It turned up no major issues, but all that I had learnt about indoor air quality still made me think that it might be a good idea to start looking at indoor air purifiers.

What Causes Indoor Air Pollution?

We spend up to 90% of our time inside buildings and during that time, we breathe over 11,000 litres of air per day. So obviously we want to make sure that air is good quality and isn’t doing us any harm by reducing toxins, pollution and fine dust in the air we breathe.

In the UK, it is estimated that up to 50% of all illnesses are either aggravated by the home or can be attributed to the home environment. According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), in 2016, household air pollution was responsible for 3.8 million deaths or 7.7% of global mortality. This is simply shocking considering that our home environment is meant to be a safe haven.

Indoor air quality is particularly important if, like me, you suffer from allergies. I am asthmatic and have rather severe animal allergies. I am also allergic to dust and I have hayfever. Obviously, I try to avoid the things that trigger my allergies, but tiny airborne particles can prove tricky to avoid.

Because of this, I have been looking at and researching indoor air purifiers to see how they might help me to deal with these allergies, especially as hayfever season is approaching.

Briiv particularly caught my eye due to its compact size and its aesthetic appeal. When I think of air purifiers I normally think of quite ugly, very techy, large appliances that would take up a lot of space and look a bit ugly in the room. Briiv isn’t like that at all. In fact, when I first wrote about it I likened it to more of a designer terrarium.

How Does briiv Work?

Briiv harnesses the power of plants to purify the air that we breathe. We have all heard how good it is to fill our homes with plants due to their air-purifying properties. I love plants and have many of them at home, mostly for their capacity to boost mental wellbeing, but also for their air-purifying abilities. But my flat is small and I can only have so many plants.

Luckily though, briiv is as powerful as 3,043 medium size houseplants. This means you can enjoy the air-purifying benefits of having plants in your home without the hassle of watering them and keeping them alive.

Briiv uses three layers to purify the air, each one specially designed to capture air particles. Large particles are captured by moss and coconut and the fine matrix filter captures the really small parts. Briiv will effectively improve the air quality in a 36m² (387ft²) living space in just one hour.

How Easy is it To Use the briiv Air Purifier?

When I unboxed the briiv air purifier I was really happy to see that there were not that many component parts. Being a bit of a technophobe I do always worry about putting things together and working out how they function. However, I was very pleasantly surprised.

I simply had to remove the briiv air purifier from the box, plug it in, and empty the bag of moss into the glass dome and we were away. There is no bulky instruction manual, but you can use the QR code on the leaflet to access the digital manual which was is extremely straightforward and precise.

A touch-sensitive interface can be found on the front of the device, but it also operates via touchless sensors so you can simply wave your hand in front of it and it will activate and light up.

There are four different speed settings to choose from depending on the clean air delivery rate that you desire. The + and – symbols increase and decrease the fan speed. At the lowest speed, the briiv air purifier is extremely quiet, almost imperceptible. At the top speed, it is particularly noisy and I would say it would be difficult to hold a conversation with this in the background.

There is a 1hr hour filter cycle, which is indicated by the illuminated 1 on the interface. This will set briiv running for an hour before it switches itself off. This is a great idea if you want to run it at full speed to refresh the air before you get home, before you go to bed, or whilst you are cleaning, so it can capture any disturbed dust and VOCs.

If you want to activate the briiv air filter remotely, there is an app that you can download to control the device via the internet.

Can I Buy Replacement Air filters for briiv?

The fact that the briiv air purifier is sustainable and made from natural materials is obviously a big plus. However, what about the actual filters inside? Standard air filters cannot be recycled. 6000 tonnes of HEPA filters are sent to landfill every year, which will take millennia to decompose. 15,000,000 air filters were purchased in 2019 which need to be replaced every 6-8 months.

The briiv filters will last up to twelve months, and the nano matrix component will need to be replaced every three months. As the filters are made from natural materials they will simply biodegrade over time.

You can purchase replacement filter packs from the briiv website. At the time of writing, they cost £34.99 for a pack that will last a year.

Where to Buy the briiv Air Purifier?

The briiv air purifier is available online at the briiv website.

How Much Does briiv Cost?

At the time of writing the briiv air purifier retails at £299.00. Then as mentioned above it will cost you £34.99 a year for the replacement filters. The running costs are extremely low. Briiv is low-powered via USB, using just 5V to operate. Over the course of a year, the estimated electricity spend is just £2.

Briiv Air Purifier Review

All-in-all, I was very impressed with the briiv air purifier. It looks great, its natural, sustainable and eco-friendly credentials are impressive. It’s compact and light-weight meaning it is easy to move around and won’t be too noticeable wherever you place it.

I like the fact that it isn’t expensive to run and that the replacement filters are made from 100% renewable and natural materials.

It is quiet on the lowest setting but really quite noisy on the highest so I would use this strategically if I needed to purify a small room extremely quickly. The 1hr boost function is incredibly useful and the fact that this can be activated via the app is very practical.

I think we can consider my briiv air purifier review a success! As usual, please leave me any comments that you may have about my briiv air purifier review below and don’t forget to pin this post for later.

    • Hi Lisa, unfortunately, unlike some of the more technological and complex air purifiers, the Briiv does not provide any feedback on the state of the air quality in the room. So it was impossible for me to include this in the review as I was unable to prove the effectiveness. The beauty of this air purifier is in the aesthetics. I had already had air quality tests done in my home so I knew that we didn’t have a problem. If you are really worried about this and want to see tangible proof that the air quality is improving, I suggest looking at an alternative air purifier that will give you more data. • The app does not work and the lack of physical buttons makes this non-useable. to turn it off I have to unplug it for as much money as I dropped on this would have expected a lot more. that being said it does filter well when you can get it on.

    • Hi Brian, Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Briiv. Have you fed this back to them? I am sure that they would appreciate your feedback so that they can improve the product. I have had no issues with the buttons myself and find it easy to operate using them. I tend to use the buttons rather than the app as I only turn it on when I am in the room so I can’t really comment on the app. But definitely contact Briiv if you are unhappy.

  • Hi, very thorough review, however what would be really helpful is a video showing the sound on different settings, would that be possible to add?
    Many thanks
