When it comes to choosing what I feature on the blog, there are some things that instantly get me excited, like colour trends or technological innovations or beautiful tiles for example. And then there are other less exciting topics that I’ve always considered to be, dare I say it, quite boring. However, over the past few years, as I’ve looked into some of these seemingly less interesting but worthy topics, what I have discovered is that actually these have been some of the most thought-provoking posts to write and the ones where I have learnt the most. And I’ve realised that these topics are anything but boring.

I mean hands up if you ever considered painting your skirting boards in a bright colour that contrasts with the wall colour? Or if you ever considered buying concrete door handles? Nope me neither. But it is often all these little details, that are neglected during the planning process, but that can actually turn out to be the star of the show.

Interior fittings such as light switches or power sockets are often overlooked and the majority of people would simply settle for the basic white plastic versions, purely because they may not realise that there are other, much better-looking options available on the market.

When we did our kitchen makeover, I requested matt black plug sockets with integral USB plugs. The electrician looked at me like I’d gone slightly mad and said he’d need to do some research as he’d never been asked for matt black before. He found them no problem and of course they were more expensive than the standard sockets he was used to fitting, but once they were in, he agreed that they looked really smart.

So it is definitely worth taking the time to do your research when it comes to these small details. They may seem inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but when your project is complete, it is these details that are the icing on the cake or the jewellery that really finishes that outfit off.

It’s actually amazing to see how these faceplates are practically invisible once installed. I had no idea something like this existed. We’re increasingly being told to paint our radiators the same colour as the wall so that they disappear, and now we can do the same with our plug sockets and light switches.

If you don’t require a totally flush faceplate, you could always opt for one that is paintable. Plates can be spray-painted in-house, finished to a RAL colour to complement the wallpaper or soft furnishings. The paintable finish is available in all the flat plate styles and can also be supplied in a primed finish for painting on-site to match the wall colour. This look works really well in more contemporary interiors.

Or alternatively, if you don’t want to paint the faceplate or if you need something equally as unobtrusive but that would work better in a period property, you could try the Prism transparent faceplates. These also disappear into the background making them barely noticeable. An added bonus is that you can choose which finish you would like the switch or the toggle to be in.
