I have to admit I had never heard of Kokeshi dolls until I received a press release about the cutest new collection of these adorable little things. Originating from Northern Japan, Kokeshi dolls are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk with no arms or legs and an enlarged head. They are often exchanged amongst friends with written messages stored within them as tokens of friendship. I like the sound of that! But what I like even more is this modern take on Kokeshi dolls by Sketch Inc for Lucie Kaas.
Becky Kemp is the artist behind the South London design studio Sketch.inc. Coming from a creative family and always being interested in illustration and design, Becky studied fine art painting before she took up a career as an art teacher. However, it wasn’t long before she decided to pursue her dream of running her own studio and working independently. In 2011, Sketch. inc was born and Becky’s adorable little kokeshi dolls gained popularity around the globe and it’s easy to see why. Becky recently joined forces to collaborate with Lucie Kaas and design a new range of 16 Kokeshi dolls inspired by historical icons from the worlds of art, design and fashion. Every doll is hand painted and makes a real design statement. I think they are so cute and would happily display them in my home. What do you think? Cute right?
I own three now Wintour, Largerfeld and Basquiat. Each one is a suvenir from trips to Vienna.
I would like to add more to my collection. I must find a Coco and a Bowie.
Do you ship to Mexico?
Best regards
Hi, I don’t actually sell these dolls, I have simply featured them on my design blog. You will need to get in touch with Sketch Inc I’m afraid. The link is in the post though.
Where do I get these plain wooden blocks?? Or do u sell plain wooden blocks
Oh my – I *need* these in my life!!
Oh wow, what fun designs! I love the idea that you can hide secret messages in them.
Oh my freaking god! I love the Karl Largefeld one (I have a badge of him on my coat right now) This is obviously a doll before he has the gastro band ;)
have you seen dorkface blog – she is obsessed by these little dolls too.
Haha Dorkface blog? Never heard of it but with a name like that I’ll have to go check it out Maxine!
These are adorable Stacey – I want them all! ;)
Me too Ari, so cute!
SO cute! I want the black and white stripy burglar! x
Ah, that one is very cute!
Love them ! Although the MR & MRS don’t look too happy . Many years ago when I sold children’s clothes I had a lady in America who made the most amazing dresses for me and one of her patterns was Kokeshi dolls. It was a best seller.
Is that the Frida and Dali dolls Karen? I think it’s Frida’s monobrow that does it lol! My favourites have to be the Karl Lagerfeld and the Coco Chanel ones.
